The Impact Player In The IPL 2023
The IPL 2023 will be the first season to feature an Impact Player one substitute who can bat and bowl but the league has stipulated that the Impact Player must be an Indian unless a team's starting XI includes fewer than four overseas players.
"This will add a new tactical, strategic dimension to the game," the IPL said in a release two days ahead of the player auction on December 23. "A number of team sports allow teams to make tactical substitutes i.e., football, rugby, basketball, baseball. The substitute is allowed to perform or participate like any other regular player."
Here's everything you need to know about the latest IPL innovation:๐๐
1. How will the Impact Player function in the IPL 2023?
๐It's not too difficult. A team must list four substitutes at the toss in addition to the playing XI. They can choose any of the four subs to be their Impact Player.
2. Can the Impact Player be added at any time?
๐There are several options. A captain can select an Impact Player and bring them in before the start of an innings, at the end of an over, when a wicket falls, or when a batter retires. However, if the bowling side brings in an Impact Player during an over at the fall of a wicket or if a batter retires, that player will be barred from bowling the remaining balls of the over.
3. What happens to the player who is replaced by the Impact Player?
๐The player who was replaced will no longer play in the game. Not even as a replacement fielder.
4. When is it impossible for the Impact Player to be an international player? And Why is that restriction in place?
๐If a team names four overseas players in their starting XI, then they can only bring in an Indian as the Impact Player. This is to keep the number of overseas players per game to four per team, as has been the case since the IPL's inception. If a team has three or fewer overseas players in their starting XI, they can bring in an overseas player as the Impact Player. However, the incoming foreign player should be one of the four substitutes named at the toss.
5. So, does this affect the number of players eligible to bat in an IPL game?
๐That is not the case. Only 11 players are allowed to bat. So, if the batting team's Impact Player is a batter who replaces a batter who has been dismissed/retired, one of the remaining players, presumably a bowler, will not bat.
6. What is the procedure for the bowling team?
๐When the bowling team brings in their Impact Player, they will be allowed to bowl their full quota of four overs, regardless of how many overs the player they are replacing bowled. Assume a team has a powerplay specialist who is bowled out at the start of the innings. However, if the bowling team brings in their Impact Player in the middle of an over, that player will not be able to bowl until the end of the over.
7. Is the Impact Player rule affected by a delayed start?
๐The IPL has stated that the implementation of the Impact Player rule will not be altered if "A delayed start reduces the total number of overs available to both sides prior to the start of the match to less than 20 overs per innings... The Impact Player can be used at any time during the game."
